for the little log cabin
A tiny tale blending stonecraft, woodcraft, country gardening, and the cycle of life
by Ian Kinross
The little log cabin had made an epic road trip to its new home in a forest grove overlooking Minden Lake. Now it would be nested in the landscape with a dry-stone terrace garden – a little piece of Tuscany in the heart of the Haliburton Highlands.

Thanks to stone craftsman John ShawRimmington for teaching me the dry-stone method and philosophy, and to my stone-walling classmates at Haliburton School of the Arts. Our friend David Finley got me intrigued about the beauty and engineering marvel of dry-stone terracing on the Italian coast. My parents-in-law Ann and Claus created a home away from home at their beautiful cottage on Horseshoe Lake. My friends and former colleagues Ruth Tomes, Linda Keon and Robin Rowe, and my sister-in-law Karen Wirsig provided valuable comments on the draft. Hannah Materne brought her deft design touch to the layout. Nadine beautified the stone terrace garden and rolled up her sleeves to help me move stones I couldn’t handle. Alison and Colleen continue to inspire me to put on my journalist’s hat and tell stories in the garden and beyond.
